2020 Fall Conference Dec 11-12

Remote Conference

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the in-person Fall 2020 conference in Monterey was not held, instead a remote conference was held via Zoom. It took place Friday, December 11, 2020, 4:45 pm - 7:30 pm (PST), and Saturday, December 12, 2020, 9:30 am to 2:15 pm (PST).

Registration for the conference was free and included one year of membership in CMC3.

The conference began with a Conference Opening and Welcome from 4:45 pm - 5:00 pm (PST) Friday, followed by a session from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, a conference cocktail (self made and administered) from 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm (PST), and the evening ended with the Friday Keynote from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. Sessions were held Saturday 9:30 am to 12:00 pm (PST) followed by the Saturday Keynote, and the day ended with Conference Closing and Thank You from 2:00 pm to 2:15 pm (PST).

Please do consider making a donation to the foundation to support their work providing student scholarhips, as they will not be able to hold the usual fundraising events at the conference.

Derivita Sponsored Drawing

Derivita kindly offered to sponsor a drawing for several wine samplers. The drawing closed Saturday, Dec 12, 2020 at 11:30 am PST. Winners were announced at noon and were Raylene Potter (Gavilan College), Linda Retterath (Mission College), Mark Turner (Cuesta College), Susanna Gunther (Solano College), and Joe Conrad (Solano Community College).

Conference Happy Hours!

Foursight

The conference was online but that didn’t mean we couldn’t have a little fun and socialize a bit. We planned a keynote cocktail, the ZOOMTini, for Friday and a special wine-pairing at lunch on Saturday with featured wines and easy to prepare recipes from Foursight Wines.

Foursight Wines offered a 2-bottle wine sampler with special pricing for conference attendees, a dedicated order link to make things easy, and they kindly donated $5 from each box purchased to the CMC3 Foundation to help support our scholarship program.

CMC3 Foundation Legacy Donor Award

The 2020 Foundation Legacy Donor Award was awarded to Pat McKeague of XYZ Textbooks.

CMC3 President’s Award

The 2020 President’s Award was awarded to Tracey Jackson of Santa Rosa Junior College.

CMC3 Distinguished Service Award

The 2020 Distinguished Service Award was awarded to Joseph Conrad of Solano Community College.

CMC3 Teaching Excellence Awards

2020 Teaching Excellence Awards were awarded to Linda Hoang (Consumnes River College), Zoya Kravets (Mission College), Hardev Dhillon (Modesto Junior College), Rick Woodmansee (Sacramento City College), Lena Feinman (College of San Mateo), Dave Ohlsen (Santa Rosa Junior College), and David Mitchell (Taft College).

Friday Keynote Speaker: Jessica Bernards
Growth Mindset: The Foundation to Success in Mathematics

A "growth mindset" has become a familiar buzzword other the last few years, but how does it relate specifically to mathematics? This presentation will discuss what a growth mindset looks like in a math class, the importance of it, and how you can foster this trait in your students.

Jessica Bernards has been teaching mathematics since 2005. She has taught a wide range of mathematics courses from Developmental Math up through Calculus, both on campus and online, and has created curriculum for all of these levels. Additionally, Jessica is a member of AMATYC’s Project ACCCESS Cohort 9 where she developed a Math Study Skills Program which is now used across the nation. In 2017, she was the recipient of the Leila and Simon Peskoff AMATYC Award for her work with Project ACCCESS.

Saturday Keynote Speaker: Dr. Brittany Mosby
Teaching to Transgress: Mathematics as a Tool for Social Justice

Building on the work of liberation pedagogy (Paolo Freire, Bell Hooks), this presentation will encourage faculty to view the mathematics classroom as a launchpad for the sucess of underrepresented and minoritized students, rather than the barrier/gatekeeper it has traditionally been. In particular, we will discuss the importance of connecting mathematics to not just "real world" applications, but also meaningful, interdisciplinary problems that more accurately reflect the reality of 21st century citizens, and problems that value and celebrate, rather than minimize and silence individual students’ identities and community connections. Example projects that inforporate social justice for first year mathematics students will also be shared.

Brittany L. Mosby is the Director of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Success programs and initiatives at the Tennessee Higher Education Commission – and the nation’s first higher education professional within a state agency focused solely on increasing the capacity of the state’s HBCUs, both public and private. As Director, Mosby develops policy, programming, and partnerships that foster student success, facilitate institutions’ ability to fulfill their missions, and further the state’s higher education attainment goals.

Prior to joining the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, Mosby was a tenured associate professor of mathematics at Pellissippi State Community College, where she also chaired the introductory statistics curricular redesign committee and led data-driven student success efforts. While at Pellissippi State she obtained over $50,000 in academic state grants and co-wrote a successful US Department of Education Title III grant in 2016, securing over $1 million in funds for faculty professional development. In her 10+ year career in higher education, she has championed access to a quality education and the pursuit of equitable postsecondary outcomes for all students.

A third-generation Spelman College graduate, Mosby is a direct beneficiary of the inter-generational social mobility made possible by HBCUs and is passionate about preserving the legacy and promoting the enduring sustainability of the unparalleled HBCU experience. Mosby also received a Master of Science in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Doctor of Education in higher education policy and leadership as a Peabody Honors Scholarship recipient at Vanderbilt University.
